PERSIMMON—AKA “Shizi (in China)”

• What does it taste like?
Persimmons generally taste very sweet and caramel-like. Depending on the type of Persimmon, Persimmons can taste like honey, pumpkin, sweet potato, cinnamon, and apricot. If not fully ripe, persimmons can taste very astringent and bitter.

• What does it smell like?
Persimmons can smell a bit sweet when ripe. The flesh itself smells very sweet.

• What does it feel like?
Persimmons have a (orange) thin skin. The texture of its (orange) flesh depends on the ripeness of the fruit. It can be very squishy and jelly-like when perfectly ripe, or hard and crunchy when unripe. The softer the Persimmon, the riper and sweeter it is.

• Where does it grow?
Persimmons are native to China. They also grow in places in the rest of Asia, Europe, and North America.

• How do you eat it?
Persimmons are commonly eaten raw on their own, or added to salads and desserts. They’re also commonly dried as a snack.
